UMOJA KARAMU! Unity Feast

UMOJA KARAMU means (Unity Feast)

Umoja Karamu, meaning "unity feast" in Swahili, is an African American celebration begun in 1971 by Dr. Edward Sims, Jr., held on the fourth Sunday in November. Its purpose is to instill solidarity, Afrikan values, and appreciation of Afrikan heritage into Afrikan American families. It is heralded for a grand Unity Feast of Knowledge, with Historical presentations for 5 periods of African American Life, followed by a grand Unity Feast of Food and Family.

Umoja Karamu (pronounced Oo-mo-jah Ca-ra-moo) are Kiswahili words that mean “unity feast.” It is a ceremony of unity that highlights events and periods that have shaped the African Diaspora of families.

Like Kwanzaa, a popular holiday celebrated after Christmas by African American families in the United States, Umoja Karamu is becoming an alternative holiday for African American families who want to distance themselves from the European Holidays like Thanksgiving.

Umoja Karamu is a ritual for the Black families that was developed to create new meaning and solidarity through ceremony and symbolism. Now African Americans have an alternative to celebrate family that represents their own heritage.

Umoja Karamu was inaugurated as a holiday in 1971 and was founded by Brother Edwards Sims, Jr. When it was first introduced it was only celebrated in Philadelphia and in Washington, D.C. Our traditional roots were violently separated, repressed, and often forgotten during a process called Colonialism.”

Like Thanksgiving, Umoja Karamu also emphasizes family gatherings and feasts, but it also features unique ceremonies. Specific foods and colors on the table are used symbolically to represent meaningful historical periods and elements in the African American experience for the family’s hope for the future.

In the Umoja Karamu tradition, the feast is presided over by the head of the household or community Leader. The 5 Ceremonial foods are placed on a Shrine to represent the Ancestors, which is covered with African fabric. In a special purification rite, a Libation is poured over a plant or tree to invite the Ancestars.

Extended family members participate directly in Umoja by bringing prepared foods to the ceremony. Candlelight and incense provide ambiance and contribute to an atmosphere of calmness and reflection. Children participate by reading narratives commemorating each historical period while the 5 Ceremonial foods representing the era is passed around. After each narrative, the food is tasted by everyone, like an hors d’oeuvre.  This process is repeated for each era. A benediction is given by the oldest person or elder that marks the end of the rite and signals the beginning of the feast itself.

Different families have their own ways of personalizing the holiday. Drums are sometimes played in the background to set the mood. A professional storyteller may also perform the narratives. Families have gotten creative when celebrating Umoja Karamu. Powerpoint presentations show pictures of the 5 periods. Some will play the music of New World music while others might learn a traditional dance.

Umoja Karamu is a way for African American families to celebrate their common history, ethnic experiences, and cultural heritage while tailoring this unique holiday to fit your family’s personality. Traditions that were once stolen can be recreated to strengthen family unity.

Thanksgiving is the American holiday of choice for many but more families are moving away from holidays that resulted in massacres of indigenous people and are seeking a cultural alternative. If you are questioning your support of Thanksgiving, Umoja Karamu might be the perfect celebration for your family.

Amen Par Ankh has presented the Umoja Karamu for more than a decade in Kansas City, Missouri.

Our Local Celebration features African American Historical Presentations Edutainment, Libations, PowerPoint display, Historical Narratives, A shrine for Ancestors, Acknowledgment of our Local Ancestors and their Achievements, Music, and an abundant Potluck Feast:

Historic Presentations and Dinner, Libations to honor ancestors, historical readings, music, and a potluck feast will mark this observance.
The celebration is based on five periods of African American life, each represented by a color and a symbolic food.

1. The color black- Pre Invasion – (Black Beans or Black Eye Peas) Black families before slavery
2. The color white- Maafa – (Brown Rice) scattering of black families (during slavery)
3. The color red- Emancipation – (Red Juice) Black Liberation struggle
4. The color green- Struggle for Civil Rights – (Green veggies)
5. The color gold- Looking to the Future – (Yellow Corn) Hope for the Future Bright)

Indigo Youth Arising

Our Indigo Youth are arising from the ashes
Of the Age of Pisces

Every Age provides the ONE
They are the KRST child
12/12/12 launched the rising of the New Age

We must prepare the way for the Aquarian KRST
The KRST Child is in all of our Indigo Children

KRST is Ka Ra Sa Ta

*the Spirit Enlightened Protector of Eartha

Leadership of every age

Have always sent their emissaries

To slaughter the KRST

Our Youth are marchin in their sufferin

From the Post-Traumatic Stress

Of the neo slavery -Prison Industrial Complex
Yes our youth are showing their @$$es
To expose the underground economy...
Our youth have been the walking wounded,

Sagging IS NOT JUST A FASHION STATEMENT!
Our Youth have been lowering their flags at half-mast for the past 30 years
As an SOS on Police corruption, injustice, homicides,

Slaughter, mass incarcerations and Genocides
Of their families and friends

Yes Saggin- Spelled backwards = Niggas
To those youth who have lost their way
Following a crowd who are caught up in
The normalizing of criminal actions

Caught up in the World Wide Web of
The CoIntelPro criminal "In-Just U.S." system,
From the Preschool to Prison pipeline to be child soldiers
To Super Predator Police and the military industrial complex.
I'm not saying that I condone this behavior-
But I also cannot condemn our young men (Or Women) either

We must embrace and Breathe life into our youth
And use each teachable moment to engage and connect with them.
I am a homeschool Resource Teacher,
I live within my students neighborhoods.
I tutor, read, feed and teach STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Industrial Arts and Mathematics) through urban agriculture at Amen Ankh Akademy.

As nature, has a cure for every illness, Our Black Youth have gone feral,
From the Mis-Education, and mundane delusions of
Patriotism, integration-ism, assimilation-ism, and Capitalism,
From the Corporatakrazy Racism-system
Following the white rabbit middle class values
Of a society of non-colored sheeple
Who try to control and exploit our Indigo people.

Our Youth think our elders have failed them and left them for “def”-in da Hood,
In the aftermath of a decade of civil rights movement
To economic integration, by the Corporate Prison invasion and perpetual wars

Of  the G.O.D. of Guns Oil and Drugs and the penalty disparities between Cocaine and Crack.
Religion is like putting a finger band aid on a leg amputation
Although prayer is positive,
Our youth need more than hope,
While their Economic bloodlines are gushing down the blood red streets full of dope.

Our Indigo Youth are generating their own freedom structures
Transforming within the background of the underground economy, despite of the odds against them.

Government officials implemented the destruction of the Indigo Americans after the many economic gains, through the Civil Rights movement in the 1970s. Co-Intel-Pro (Counter Intelligence Programming)
was implemented by the Korporatakrazy of the US.
They financed Gangster Rap
To become the Pied Piper human trap;
Luring our youth to a Pinocchio Piccadilly Circus.
To be mauled by Killer Klown Kops- who are worthless tools, used to
fill the Mass Incarceration/Prison industrial complex or Lynching and publicly executing our youth as martyred sacrificial lambs, with impunity. They are involved with Gun running Drugs, Prostitution, gambling, Organs harvesting, Abortions, Poisoned Food and Water, Man made STDs and plagues, human trafficking, drug mules, and sacrificing our young women into showing their @$$es, as sex slaves.

Now conscious Hip Hop Culture has become that Nu-cypher,
Our KRSTs are moving to a green environmental movement
That Thang,
That lantern, pathway
That talking drum,
That light in the tunnel, for all youth around Mama Eartha.
Taking on the accountability to the ecosystem
And their role in the sustainability of the Planet.
Ha Le Lu Yah

Their Truth is Marching on!

What are the issues to Heal the Hood?

  • Youth empowerment and building a revolutionary sustainable way of life through local production and home cottage industry
  • Gang and Underground economy truce.
  • Building an anti-poverty and employment and vocational movement for the Urban At-Risk Youth, Prison re-entry populations and low income people out of work;
  • Building a mass movement against racist police terror and brutality, and to end racial profiling;
Fighting School to mass imprisonment of our youth, and people of color, which is crippling families and their communities.

How to organize an autonomy chapter in your city to do revolutionary grassroots organizing.

Who should come to Amen Par Ankh?

Activists, educators, students, workers, and many others, in fact, everyone who has looked at the problems of unemployment, poverty, infant mortality, police murder and brutality, and other issues concentrated in The black community, and said to themselves: “There has to be an answer!” Well, there is, the Black people must organize their own mass movement and must direct our voted officials and those in political offices, corporations, and other institutions. Yet, we must all be willing to learn new ideas and hear new voices and from new leadership and youth, not heard from before. We need real solutions, instead of the political dead ends distractions and busy work of the past few years that have been presented. Kansas City needs this new path, to jumpstart people's power structures in the urban areas that can lead to the building of new social movements all over the Americas. This is a worker's movement, which anyone in our community can attend if they come to work to solve our own problems.

* You should come because you want solutions to what you see in our communities every day and on the nightly news: unemployed young men on the corner; dead youth at the hands of each other or from the police; massive numbers of Black people thrown into jail and prisons over the drug trade, families overcoming nutritional deprivation and poverty, and other issues we see but don’t understand there is something we can do about this. We are talking about building solutions to our problems: a new campaign about police brutality and terrorism that includes community self-defense; a mass movement against poverty and unemployment that includes building a Black solidarity economy, at a time when our community is suffering from depression levels of unemployment. We need to talk about how we build a mass movement for youth empowerment in order to turn the youth into community organizers and agents for social change. We will talk about a mass community-based movement against racial profiling and deadly police and auxiliary police attacks on Black youth; and finally, we need to talk about how to build a movement for Autonomy in your city, in order to apply what you have learned at this conference.
