We continue to engage our families and communities with the knowledge and understanding of Afrikan self-awareness and awakening! Feel Free to post your Afrikan Centered Knowledge- A great virtual resource for home scholars are using this stream. Our Youth are watching everything we do.

Giri So (Word at Face Value), Benne So (Word to the Side), Bolo So (Word From Behind), So Dayi (The Clear Word), Aduno So (The Astonishing Word.)
“Knowledge of self is the key to healing and freeing ourselves from global Maafa.”

We model our homeschool after ACECC which was a Contract School operated in cooperation with what was known as the Kansas City, Missouri School District, until 2011. It was managed by the Afrikan Centered Education Taskforce Incorporated (ACETI). The Afrikan Centered Education Collegium Campus was composed of three buildings serving scholars K-12, located on a 40.2 acre campus, west of Swope Parkway between 63rd Street and Meyer Blvd. ACECC disseminated the knowledge of the best of global Afrikan achievements, often written out of history, to prepare our youth for the global world, to pursue leadership, invention, production and enterprise, yet to also be committed to their own local wealth-creating community and economic development.

In the 1990 Adenike AmenRa graduated from KU and left a domestic violent relationship, only to come to the Kansas City urban core, that had become the site of Cointelpro evasion of guns, drugs, and predatory police, with their victims engaged in violent criminal activities, open drug sales, and prostitution, with an underground economy and strong gang presence. She made the decision to have a positive future for her children, and the youth of the community. Sparked by the inspiration of the Black Panther Party Youth Food Program and Black liberation Freedom schools, She began studying Afrikan Dance, and traveled extensively to attend Afrikan Centered lectures and visit communities across the country. Adenike’s own Children lived most of their teen years around this positive environment of an entrepreneurial Black family and an African Centered Cultural values system of Nguzo Saba (7 principles).
With her background in Visual Communication, Crafts, and Fine Art, she grew a garden in her backyard and cultivated mulberry trees to make dyes for fabrics, and clothing with food products to set up as a vendor. She was inspired to teach in the community, obtaining her master's degree in Exceptional Education for more than a decade. She has lectured in Kansas City, and Memphis, also hosting an internet radio presence. She currently ministers and directs a Temple of Life ministry called Amen Par Ankh nestled around an urban farm of Herbs, Cruciferous vegetables, and the Three Sisters of Corn Bean and Melons.

It was her experiences with Special Education K-12, that launched her interest in creating a homeschooler cooperative network. The vision of youth growing and eating their own foods and their connection with the ecosystem and environment
In the spring of 2012, Adenike along with other Urban Farmers, Launched “Heal the Hood” in Kansas City, to work in 64128 zip code, the most desolate area of Kansas City, Missouri, aiming to provide urban neighborhoods and schools with the curriculum supported by results-driven interactive workshops, and gardening programs.

We want school community to help fund and activate indoor and outdoor gardens with schools and their communities on a larger scale. Our goal is to address the health epidemic of Afrikan Americans, in mind body and spirit, by providing local food access as a solution to our health crisis, and advocate green Business production and career development, food production and localization using this plan. Planting the seeds (with the youth) is the key to a fruitful future, and we are taking it upon ourselves to provide the youth and community with the education and tools necessary around these issues. Your contribution is vital in making this happen.

THE STRUGGLE TO FEED OUR FAMILIES.

The ability to access high quality, fresh food in low income Black families is a major issue. Black people are dying more in the general population, from Heart Attack, Stroke, Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, and Cancers than any other population. These diseases can all be controlled by better options and choices that they eat and drink. The lack of access and nutritional education has created a health epidemic in these populations. A new Canadian Study recently conducted, shows "There was a 20% higher risk of diabetes in the lowest 2 income groups compared with the highest group, which translated into an extra 2500 diagnoses of diabetes for that year," senior author of the research, Lorraine Lipscombe, MD, from the University of Toronto, Ontario, told Medscape Medical News:
TOXIC FARMING AND LONG DISTANCE FOOD TRANSPORTATION.
Food travels an average of 1,500 miles from farm to fridge by ship, plane, and truck. Pesticides leak into the soil, water, and our bodies. Industrial agriculture leads to unhealthy soil and loss of wildlife. If we localize food production and distribution on a community level, we can easily solve this problem.

CORPORATE DOMINATION. Corporate concentration causes small businesses to struggle. Consumers feel disempowered to make change. We intend to empower our communities by creating entrepreneurial opportunities around holistic health, food production, and green careers.

LACK OF EDUCATION. The leading unhealthy corporate heads spend billions per year marketing their unhealthy products to young children and families. Most families are simply unaware of the vicious cycle of low quality food and health, and furthermore, what to do to change that. Education is the key to providing communities to spark change.

How do we get the inner-city youth and families on board with creating healthier, greener, sustainable communities?

The Solution

Amen Ankh Academy and Urban Farms offer tools that can change that.

Youth Going Green Programing also has goals to work with Juvenile detention-re-entry into career fields in Urban Agriculture, as well as “You GROWW Girl- Teach a girl heal a nation curriculum, and Adenike’s Art Reduce Reuse Recycle, Amen Ankh Urban Farm, and Amen Par Ankh (Sacred Temple of Life.)

Our vision

We propose microloans for the installation of Aquaponic Systems in the homes and institutions of each group site that will be built and maintained by each student and family member. These Systems will provide a foundational economy of fish and food production for the academy. as well as the perimeter and peripheral community. The greywater and all production refuse will be filtered, composted and recycled back into the farm as fertilizer. Each body of students will work organically to leave a legacy that will be built upon by the next collective of students, much like George Washington Carver and the Tuskegee Institute, where the Students built and maintained their own school through work-study.
Amen Ankh Academy will create in effect an artisan’s guild and culture of creative craft-persons and performance artists. As well as Producers and manufacturers who will promote engineering capacities and self-perpetuation in computer aided technologies, with Land and resource acquisition and preservation.
Each student will be producing alternative ways of food production and preservation like sprouting, rooftop and vertical farming, Beekeeping, Orchards, Compost vermiculture, clay and mineral acquisition, etc.. Recycling Aluminum, Plastic and Glass,- Producing Herbal products, canning, teas, dyes, oils, etc. etc.

Each student will establish their own entrepreneurial goals and objectives to create their own production models and business plans. Creating Fine Art and Performance Arts which will be populated into e-commerce. Every student will be able to repeat and spawn a sustainable society using natural resources, anywhere in the world.

Amen Ankh Academy, has created a spoken word DVD titled the Green Griot Gathering, capturing the life and times of Urban Guerrilla Farming in Kansas City and a curriculum that bridges the gap of inner-generational dialogue around alternative medicines and food security. In order to spark the conversation with our future (the youth,) an interest has to be created, and it has to be relevant. The curriculum was designed to teach young people the importance of a localized food system, what it means to live in a food desert, and how to sustain themselves in one. Some of the activities include hands-on healthy cooking and juicing demonstrations, films, Meditation, yoga, urban Alternative gardening, introduction to Aquaponics and more. We are engaged in outreach to various communities and anticipate an impact of over 6,000 youths aged 8 to 24.

The Impact

To spark change, the interest must be created in an informative and relevant way. We want to see schools and other community Centers with equitable access to good food, have enough to eat, end health disparities in low-income and communities of color, and honor every community's right to culturally relevant, safe, and healthy food. Providing the education as groundwork, and the ability to grow food in these communities is vital. We want to localize food production, reduce energy consumption and the carbon footprint by supporting schools and communities with the education and tools to do so.

Curriculum The Amen Ankh Academy Curriculum is a Home Schooling Cooperative STEAMM (Science technology Engineering Arts Mathematics Medicine) model with- Hands on Natural Sciences, Martial Arts, Knowledge of self and life management courses. The Program works within the structure of a self-help, peer group relationship, with facilitators monitoring the group’s achievements. Pre-K-8 fundamental learning, then move onto a Montessori model of hands on individualized objectives and project based learning. Each student will construct their own IEP (Individualized Learning Program). We will use pre- approved E-Learning curriculum for core curriculum, to study and review, using a combination of two systems, Project Based Learning and a Comprehensive system (lessons played through to the end of the chapter). The curriculum is presented by a trained facilitator who serves as a mentor and guide. Hands on Performance assessments using Multiple intelligence style are administered at the end of each chapter to monitor the scholar's understanding and learning. In addition, personal growth inventory questionnaires will be completed by the participants rating themselves on a scale from 0 to 10 both before and after the course, which they keep in a notebook- journal for their own future use. In addition, Life Management Skills Survey, rating the trainee 1 – 5, is completed by the trainees, their parents or guardians, facilitators, and counselors at the end of the course.

The Amen Ankh Academy ’s social curriculum is designed to assist in the development of life management skills in eight critical areas of (1) Motivation, Habits, Attitudes; (2) Goal Setting; (3) Problem Solving and Decision Making; (4) Emotional Control; (5) Family Relationships; (6) Financial Stability; (7) Effective Communication; (8) Entrepreneurial/ vocational.

The learner will acquire at least one concept of human development coupled with instructions of how to develop the particular skill required to successfully merge the concept of behavior into the individual’s life. As they progress through the manual, an accumulation of various skills and techniques are incorporated into the trainees lives this equipping them with tools for success.
The curriculum is based on a three-pronged teaching methodology including Sensory Perception, Cypher Group Discussion, and Spaced Repetition.

1. Sensory Perception. Utilizing Hands on experiences and working with multiple intelligence- with audio-visual aids to assist scholars with reading and/or learning disabilities or who are marginally literate.

2. Cypher Group Discussion: each participant is allotted time using the “talking stick” to comment without interruption; group members may comment on what was previously said or offer new subjects for discussion.

3. Spaced Repetition: Lessons are presented up to three times to ensure comprehension and maximum retention of the principles of success, focus, determination, and responsibility.

A trained Amen Ankh staff member guides each class and encourages honest expression in the interpretation and application of the curriculum. The class size shall be approximately 15 to 20 students per facilitator. At the completion of each training session, the graduates are recognized by a ceremony honoring their work in front of their family and friends.

The Great White Hope!

white elephant is a possession which its owner cannot dispose of and whose cost, particularly that of maintenance, is out of proportion to its usefulness. The term derives from the story that the kings of Siam, now Thailand, were accustomed to make a present of one of a white elephant to courtiers who had rendered themselves obnoxious, in order to ruin the recipient by the cost of its maintenance. In modern usage, it is an object, scheme, business venture, facility, etc., considered without use or value
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_elephant

So the "white elephant" is a war tactic, to passively destabilize and weaken a target.

Amen Ankh Urban Farm is an Indigo Native American initiative. We as well as many other Black farmers were fostered- (like Green acres Urban Farm and Research project) to work with Cultivate KC. We Submitted applications for Grants, through Missouri Agricultural agencies... and participated with the disadvantaged Farmers conferences... All of Our grant applications were spuriously rejected and we were promptly removed from their directory list of Urban Farmers... Yet our ideas were used and implemented by gentrifiers...

We know that gentrifiers want to move our (Afro-American) families out of the metro midtown areas and into their abandoned suburbs as renters-not owners. They want to relegate Black people as "consumers" and never owners... Gentrifiers don't want to promote the growth of Black economics within the metro Kansas City areas, ergo-They don't want to share power... We are blocked from building our own subdivisions or intentional communities, by caucasian owned banks, investors, and creditors. We are corralled to follow behind the gentrifiers from the old guard, of JC Nichols, Halls, Truman, etc... Yes, Caucasians, who seek to re-segregate the midtown areas surrounding the Power and "Light" district.  Monies have been siphoned from the Jazz district and even the repairs of Freedom Fountain- (east of the plaza fountains,) to economically enrich the crossroads and downtown areas.

The White Elephant concept creates "The Big fish in the small pond" concept, where one "token" suffices for many... All they will have to do to control this fish, is to attack their reputation- etc, or withhold money and access- (like they did with ACECC, in Kansas City, or what they still do with "Oprah Winfrey"- They will latch on to their small successes to coral money to their own private pipelines, while the patrons pay- and exhaust their resources to expand and multiply their objectives...

As Black businesses, we must work cooperatively and not competitively... Economics is a Family-based system. We must formulate our own Gnome family systems. These independent Business owners and multi-level marketing scams create Isolation, division and competition among the economic relationships that are built...
Gentrifiers, have created their own Intended sustainable communities, around a mecca of services and access, with the decline and destruction of the environment for fossil fuels, instead of living in the outskirts of towns in their white flight areas. super cities are now being planned.

The Meaning of Bey, El, Ali, Al, and Dey

ISLAM

The meaning of the "Bey" or "El" added at the end of people's last name signifies that they are returning to the knowledge of being a Moor. Bey and El are family names of people that belong to the Nation of Moors, also associated with the ancient Moabites. The name Bey or El, was used as a title as well. Ultimately, Bey or El is used as a family name like Soprano is for Italians, Don for Latins or Lee is for the Chinese. My Name is Nuta Beqsu Adenike AmenRa Mosley El.

The reason Bey or El has been removed from so-called "black" people in North America is due to the fact that people who have Melanin, were raided in the Americas, kidnapped from their own lands right here in the Americas, human trafficked, and held captive as prisoners to be forced to work on plantations in the US Maritime occupation of the Americas. During the period, of the Trans-Atlantic Wars, Moors who were captured were stripped of their land, nationality, divine creed, or anything linking them to their Title, Nation, heritage, Language, Ethnic Family, and names, through Paper Genocide. These captured Nationals were considered and used as property and were reassigned the last names of their masters. This is how you can have someone like Shaquille O'Neal, Michael Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, ect., who have the last names known to be Irish, or English when they are not. This is what is known as paper genocide of our people, culture, and society. We were evacuated from our rightful land, resources, and wealth then trapped to either work on our own occupied lands or die. while our heritage, documents, titles, treaties, etc... were ignored and destroyed.

http://amen-parankh.blogspot.com/2017/01/ancient-naming-ceremonies-return.html

Malcolm X- Malik el Shabazz explains his reasoning for using the title X.

So now when you see -Bey or -El titles added to the last name, it is merely so-called black people returning to the ways of their ancestor's true identity of being Moorish, and also returning to their divine creed of Islam. They did not give up the last names that their ancestors took on, because they carry that to always be linked to their ancestors and as a reminder of the brutality of their captivity and the stripping of their nation of people, reducing them to sub-human status. The annexing of Bey or El brings them back into the families of nations. Those people who change their name when they return to Islam are taking on an Arabic name, yet that is not a prerequisite to practicing Islam.

Here are five Kushite/Khemetian/Moorish titles of nobility that ties so-called "Indian"/"Indo"/"Indios"/"Indus", "Blacks" to the sovereignty of America/Amexem/Al Moroc/North Gate:

El, Bey, Dey, Al and Ali.

These five titles also belong to the "Five Civilized Tribes".

These tribes are:
El - Cherokee.
Bey - Choctaw.
Dey - Seminole.
Al - Creek.
Ali - Chickasaw

The Title El means God or power, Executive, Law Maker, Creator

Bey means ruler or landlord, Enforcer, Officer,

Dey means knowledgeable,

Al means the same as El (Feminine/Goddess),

Ali means exalted or most high.

As for Titles, we must at the primary and foundational level be Els and Beys BEFORE self-assigning titles that are earned by Degree.  It is likened to wanting to come in and go straight to the highest degree without foundational and primary knowledge to support the climb.  The other titles Al, Dey, and Ali are reserved for the functioning of the Nation by degrees that MUST NOT be self-assigned.  Many may wish to ignore these principles, however, the universe does not allow circumscribing.

El -  the lawmakers, lawgivers, likened to Executives.

Bey -  law enforcers, O-Bey -- the law.  A MUFTI is a Mohammedan Judge

Ali - is a title reserved for those who are, or who have reached a Master degree in their line of studies, inclusive of published dispensations.  Thus is an earned title, reserved for the workings of the Nation and not to be self assigned.  Many get it confused with their corporate state Masters Degree, however, if you read "Religious Controversy', from the "Moorish Literature' booklet, there is information regarding those who have received those degrees and the mental state they are in whether they recognize it or not.
.
Al - is also reserved for the nation in earning degrees in the sciences:  Mathematical, Geometrical, Psychological, etc.,

Dey -  is meant for and reserved for same in degrees of Astrological, Cosmological, other sciences, etc.

The Twa/Khoisan of Akabalan, Are the oldest people on the planet. They are the Ancients and were the FIRST people to migrate to all of the continents from Akabalon (Africa), including Australia, Europe, Asia, and the Americas- as well as islands of Planet Earth to establish Civilizations! The Twa/Khoisan Ancient Ancestors were the first inhabitants of Europe. Later, the Caucasians appeared and began the establishment of war cults against Indigo people, and the destruction of the natural ecosystems and the environment.
We are Souls (Sol) having a human experience. Many of our kindred can trace their life ancestry to The Dogon and Po Tolo.  “The Dogon”, are a tribe in Mali who found stars called "Po Tolo.”  These stars have been celebrated by this particular group of people for centuries. Yet, they can see them with the naked eye! Many of our people acknowledge that we are from the dimensions of the universe.

Many Indigo communities left Europe, following the Earth's Energy vortexes, while the Caucasians subsisted, from the ruins of what the KMT societies left behind.

After thousands of years of decline of the Caucasians, the Moors later migrated to Europe, and discovered these Caucasians, dying out from their own offensive sanitation and unhygienic practices. The Moors found their existence, appalling as they were consumed with plagues, and madness, with no water purification or proper sewage systems. The Moors taught these people how to use soap to bathe themselves and helped them build water purification and proper garbage and sewage systems. The Moors brought the Caucasians out of the Black Death and the Dark Ages of illiteracy to the Renaissance of humanity, civilization, and understanding of Ancient Arts and Sciences.

The Moors ignored the warning signs from the Bes, the Twa/Khoisan Ancient Ancestors to stay away from these Yacub/Yurugu. Mixed up with the calcified consciousness of Aryan Arab ideas and belief systems, the Moors felt compelled to have pity on the Caucasoid's self-imposed plight, to bring them aid, and to release these Caucasians from Bes' spell of the Flat Earth. Now, these Caucasians have been running rampant, on a terrorist reign of destruction not only on the Indigo Peoples but on the environment of Planet Earth for more than 2012 years!

It was the knowledge of the Moors that brought the Europeans out of the dark ages. KMT of Akabalon and Moors(blacks) were the ship-builders and map makers; yet no one remembers that the Black Moors ruled all of Europe and Latin America, including Spain, for almost 1000 years! No one remembers the names of the Moors who were the Captains of the Nina, Pinta or Santa Maria. These Ship-men had the astronomical, nautical knowledge, protractors, compasses and maps, to be sponsored by Queen Isabella. Columbus was just a contracted explorer. These Moor Captains already knew where they were going! They just went home to the Americas. They already knew that the earth was not a disc, but indeed a sphere!

So Moors were already established in the Americas.

We know that there is NO "race."
Race was manufactured as a political construct for social control and class/economic status. Our society would fair better to completely remove race as a narrative, into our future. ALL HUMAN (Hue+Ma+N) beings (people with natural melanin,) come from Afrika. Yes, Afrikan people, in their multiple varieties, are our oldest known Ancestry on the planet. The "Eve Gene is found in the DNA of every Black Melanin woman.

Yet, Caucasians are the exception. They are "Mankind," possessing a hybrid form of RH- blood that possesses fragments of RNA, that tie them to Neanderthals and Rhesus Apes. The Original Indigo Hunter-Gatherers were NOT Neanderthals. Caucasians were crossbred as Mankind and only made their appearance on the planet 10,000 years ago. A rare few possess, what is known as O Negative blood. They rarely survive childbirth, because the blood of their fetus attacks them. The Caucasians are essentially Identity Thieves. Everything that Aryan Caucasians claim, own, or represent was stolen from Indigo people. The Moors, who conquered and governed Europe for almost 1000 years. broke the spell of Bes, the Curse of the Dark Ages, and the Flat Earth, which was able to contain the caucasoids into a small area in the north, for Aeons, where they were afraid to cross. During their government, the Moors brought Wealth and Health, through East and West African Knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering, Fine and Industrial Arts, Agriculture, Mathematics, Hygiene, Philosophy and the Enlightenment of the Geo Planet terrestrial movement, using electromagnetics and the Stars for Nautical movement.

Amen Ankh Urban Farm- Wild Edible Plant Foods: Identifying Purslane

Foraging: Identifying and Eating Purslane (avoid poisonous spurge!)

Purslane: abundant, tasty, very nutritious, and pretty easy to identify--with just a couple pointers!

Identification difficulty for the Novice

Purslane, (latin name: Portulaca oleracea), is a wonderful, edible "weed". It's tasty, versatile, highly nutritious, easy to find, grows everywhere and is relatively easy to identify. It's not native to North America, so it is generally considered to be an invasive weed. For those of you with an interest in Foraging, homesteading, and/or sustainable eating, choosing invasive species for your meals is one of the most sustainable, locavore options. There's even a word for it: invasivore

Purslane does have one dangerous look-a-like: the potentially deadly spurges. (Euphorbia varieties). I find that they really don't look that much alike, and there is one tried and true way to tell them apart--making purslane a good plant for even a novice forager.

With that in mind, I'd like to tell you everything I have learned about purslane, including how to identify it, and how not to confuse it with spurge, and some basic cooking tips.

Purslane history

Purslane has spread throughout all of the Old World, (Europe, North Africa, and Asia). It is eaten fairly frequently through out it's range, especially in the Indian subcontinent. With European imperialism, purslane spread to Australia and North and South America, where is is commonly eaten,(especially Mexico)-- Strangely, it is often considered a weed and not eaten in U.S. or Canada in the modern day. (It used to be eaten in parts of the US as recently as WWII.)

Purslane can be found almost anywhere, and can adapt itself to a variety of climates, from arid to damp, hot to cold, and sun to shade. It's considered a succulent, and can adapt itself to environments that experience the extremes of  rainy seasonal monsoons and months-long droughts.

Identifying Purslane: Portulaca oleracea*

  1. Purslane grows low along the ground, generally under 3". Occasionally it will create a bunch or cluster, which can grow about 6" high. It grows from a central taproot, so all the branches of an individual plant will come together at the same place.
  2. Purslane is a succulent. Both stalk and leaves have a thick, fleshy feeling to them. The leaves are not as thick as in most decorative succulents, but their leaves and stems are thicker than spurge. Think of the thickness of kid leather. (See close-up pic).
  3. Stems can be red or green with a reddish tinge. Small bright yellow flowers can grow from the cluster of leaves. Leaves are a bright green.
  4. Leaves grow out from the stalk in a "star", of four leaves. Sometimes 2 of these leaves will form before the others, but most times you see the leaves on a plant they will be in groups of 4--often 2 large and 2 small. This looks very similar to a whorled leaf configuration.
    See pic.
The four-leaf "star" like growth of purslane
  5. Purslane leaf edges are smooth, not serrated. (They don't have jagged or toothy edges)
  6. Purslane stems are smooth and hairless.
  7. Most importantly: if you break the stem of purslane, there is NO sticky white liquid (called latex), Purslane may be a little sticky, but it will be clear, not white. However, small the latex on small spurge plants can be very hard to notice and/or dry up quickly, so make sure to use ALL identification points.

Disclaimer

Important!

Never eat any wild plant unless you are 100% sure that you have identified an edible species.
Always cross-reference the information you find on the internet with an expert, a foraging group, or several reference books. Have fun, but be responsible. Identification is entirely your responsibility. . . and it can also mean your life!

*As always you should never accept anything you read on the internet without verifying it for yourself with either a local expert or several publications. Colors can vary from monitor to monitor, and images are not as clear as in printed materials. Personally, before I eat anything I verify it with at least 3 reliable sources. I have found this to be a remarkably good way of ensuring my safety when foraging.

Poisonous Spurges: Euphorbia varieties
  1. Euphobia is a pretty big genus, including poinsettias, which are also poisonous. Spurges also grow low along the ground, generally under 3", and they too can grow higher. They also grow in a creeping fashion, out of a central point.
  2. Spurges are not succulents, so the leaves are thinner, like typical plants. If you look at this spurge image, the leaves are almost paper-thin. Not all varieties are this delicate, but none are as thick as those of purslane.
  3. Stems can be red or green with a reddish tinge. Leaves are a darker green, compared to purslane, in most varieties.
  4. Leaves grow parallel to each other on the stem in pairs. These leaves will always be opposite each other on the stem, unless they are growing at the junction of a branch. (Then the 2 leaves and the branch will come off the stem evenly spaced--like the spokes in a wheel). But there will never be more than 2 leaves at the same point on the stem.
  5. Every spurge I know of has serrated, indented or toothed leaves. However, sometimes these serrations are very small, and the teeth can also be small and widely spaced--appearing smoother.
  6. Most (but not all) spurges have hairy stems. Some also have hairy leaves.
  7. Most importantly: if you break the stem of a spurge, it will ooze a sticky white liquid, called latex.
Because of leaf pairings, spurge tends to grow more horizontal than purslane. A flatter flat, if you will.
Just as poinsettia can become a problem for house pets, spurges have caused deaths among sheep or other small domestic foraging animals. If you have spurge in your yard, I would use gloves, and try pulling it out if you have young children or pets who go out un-escorted.

Sustainability

Purslane is a non-native species in the Americas. (To be completely fair, there may be native varieties, but they have interbred and/or died out from competition with the ones brought over from the new world). Purslane is commonly considered to be an invasive species. Invasive generally implies that the plant is doing active harm to the native environment/species, like edible Kudzu. Invasive species are generally considered to be beneficial. in their introduction,

However purslane has been here so long that it's pretty much done whatever damage it's going to do. Like dandelion, it's very possible that purslane wiped out native species when it arrived, but the invading colonizers weren't keeping track, so we really have no idea.

Eating a bunch of purslane, even wiping out a local patch or two isn't going to do any damage to your environment. (Provided you don't use chemicals, of course). Of course, In my opinion, purslane is a very pretty plant, as well as a tasty one. And, given that it can and will grow everywhere, and spreads quickly, you can use it for a nice ground cover in areas you are having difficulty getting anything to grow. Purslane will grow from cuttings, so if you want to get rid of it, don't compost, or let it go to seed. Kept in check, however purslane is a good companion plant for gardens, and helps retain soil moisture.

Eating Purslane

Purslane is a great vegetable for anyone: forager, or gardener. Unlike some wild plants which are bitter (and need to be boiled) or tough and stringy (and do best in a food processor), purslane has excellent flavor and texture, and can be prepared raw or cooked. The leaves, flowers and stems are all edible, (I have never heard of anyone eating the roots--so I would avoid them).

Eaten raw, they have a juicy, crunchy texture. I would call it closest to celery, with an okra like liquid. without the stringiness of celery. The flavor is somewhat tart with a mellow grassy note, or like a mild seaweed.  Where I used to live, it grew prolifically, by roadsides and parking lots--(areas where you would risk ingesting dangerous chemicals.)

Use purslane raw in salads, and sandwiches. When cooked, purslane looses much of it's unique texture, becoming soft like cooked spinach. If you cook it lightly, however, it makes an excellent substitute for pasta--like a thick spaghetti or an udon noodle. Purslane is naturally vegan and gluten free, but has mucilaginous aspect: like okra, purslane will release a sticky liquid when cooked. This "mucilage" can be used to thicken soups and stews, or even an egg white substitute, but if using purslane as a pasta substitute, you will need to rinse the veggie thoroughly and may need multiple changes of boiling water. Cooking purslane also removes much of the sour apple flavor, making it taste more like a spinach or other cooked pot-herb. Other cultures around the world use purslane in baked goods, including semi-sweet applications.

Nutrition

I rarely get to talk about nutrition in wild plants, because the studies just haven't been done. But purslane has a long history of consumption, throughout the world, and we know a lot about what it has to offer.

Purslane is a nutritional powerhouse. Vegetarians and vegans especially will be excited to know that purslane has more heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids than any other leafy vegetable plant. It's protein and iron concentrations are higher than in any cultivated vegetable--including kale. Purslane has more magnesium, vitamin A and vitamin E than kale as well. In a calorie to calorie comparison, it has more potassium than a banana. In addition there are some B vitamins, a good amount of vitamin C, a fair amount of calcium, and a smattering of those micronutrients people say we should get more of. . . All nutritional data has been gathered from the Wikipedia page.

Note of caution

Purslane has oxalates in it, similar to Japanese knotweed and wood sorrel. As we've mentioned before, many veggies you can buy in the store have oxalic acid, including spinach and rhubarb. People with kidney problems and/or rheumatoid arthritis should avoid these foods. The sick, the elderly, the very young and women who are pregnant or nursing should also avoid wild plants on general principle.
