Building Bridges Between Parents and Their Children's Education

I was asked by Kihei to comment on our parents and education in Kansas City. The following are some points as a Special Education Teacher in the Kansas City School district:@ Kihei-

  • We must revolutionize the way we think about education for our youth! As parents We must return to “Dynastic” thinking. What I mean by this is- passing on a heritage and leading by example. This is how the elite think in provision for their children. “PRO-VISION”  -Visioning for the Long term future with expectations and outcomes! I’m talking about 10-20-50year plans for the outcomes and expectations for their youth and their children’s place in their family business, neighborhood and ECO-NOME.

  • PARENTS NEED TO TEACH THEIR OWN VALUES, FAITH SYSTEMS AND HISTORY- Learn and Practice a value system like- the Nguzo Saba- (Principals Seven)... Celebrate Umoja Karamu AT HOME Celebrate Kwanzaa AT HOME-

  • THEY MUST READ TO THEIR CHILDREN- AND let their children catch them reading- by example- talk about books, Find Local Black writers and authors, and talk about current events in the news. This helps with values and critical thinking. If the parent is not teaching and passing on their values- some one else is/will. Buy the Final Call(There is a man standing right in the street to give you knowledge and/or a delicious bean pie!) and other local black newspapers and magazines. Places like The Urban League give away magazines free of charge.

  • WE NEED TO HOMESCHOOL! I want to start an underground homescholar network system!

  • The only way the ELITE would put their child in a boarding school or institution, is after they personally build the institution with a state of the art Environment and materials, equipping their child with what they need-TO LEAD- Not to follow. When we think about accreditation- That should be the PARENTS going through the school with a fine tooth comb- From the toilets, the Cafeteria, Classrooms and Teachers.

  • High Expectations and belief in our youth- When you have parents, teachers and administration that have low to no expectation for their youth and family- “every bodies grunging for the dollar and surviving from day to day in a “by-design-system” We were too quick to decapitate the heads of the giant district. We have gone through so many superintendents- but we were too quick to replace one with another who may be taking under-the-table deals to sell out our youth. We fail to acknowledge that when the head comes off the body falls and our children suffer from the collateral damages.

  • We forget that our youth are learning from EVERYTHING and EVERYONE -ALL THE TIME!

  • When the children come home to a latch-key world of an empty unsupervised house with Acidic Chicken nuggets(pink slime)- “?Chips-salt and grease” and Cinnamon rolls from da corna-lika-stow- or poptarts - potpies or some other frozen microwave meal of GMO playfood… When Mom & Pops are outa sight- the child is outa they mind- you have “Da katz away da mice will play” situations- Drug use, delinquency, violent desensitizing videogames, Sex- pregnancy- HIV, mind-numbing TV couch-potato- childhood-diabetes-obesity beasts. All under a truculent background of misogyny-ated message music dope buzz beats and Rap... It's a setting for gang indoctrination.

  • We have Amen Par Ankh(Sacred Temple of Life) on my block... Any scholar can come by my door and get free fruit and tutoring... Just by word of mouth they come by...

  • We need Teachers–who are invested in the neighborhood’s development to teach our children- how to return –Come right back and work in the neighborhood to take ownership and re-develop community.

  • So Parents need to stop thinking about (getting their child- “OUT of the ghetto”) “Work to live” NOT “live to work”.

  • Another issue; Putting a child into college with only a remedial background is - like playing our children in a lottery – 9x out of 10 you lose -setting our children up for failure- THESE COLLEGES KNOW THIS and take the child in anyway- use their money for remedial classes then kick them out with a debt for life.

  • I would like to encourage the Parents who sit down with their families at least once a week and have a family morning, day, night, weekend- lock-in- turn off all electronic media- and eat a home cooked meal- Our children need MORE fresh fruits and vegetables in their bodies to grow properly- not milk. So a fresh salad or smoothie... -to eat and talk with NO distractions. Have a smoothie breakfast- or Sunday dinner with Elders to teach family history, values and establish goals and objectives together...

  • Go outside and enjoy the weather and observe life around, Look at the moon and read the stars... take a walk- go to a park,

  • Sit with them in a court room, bring them to a bank, or any career vocational setting, let them see black business owners, talk to automotive, or lawn cutting business owner, a black judge or attorney,

  • Visit the elderly and volunteer in a nursing home, Community Garden, Urban Farm or Hospital ...
  • Teachers should be identifying our struggling children not only academically but socially for the students success... It is a war zone in the neighborhoods in many cases, with child custody issues and 2 youth dying every week...

  • We NEED Counselors on staff for crisis counseling. when a youth dies in the community- it effects all of the people who knew that youth...

"It takes a village to raise a child"... this may be an over saturated Afrikan Proverb- (And I personally don't like the term "village" to describe aboriginal or indigenous communities) - I like Knome-Gnome Nome , Council of Elders- "The Griots" or as Sasteh uses "the Klan" (is this upstaging Kanye West or what-LOL) the "X-Klan" lol... But my point is - We need to help the parents and/or single parents who are overwhelmed or dysfunctional. - "We are only as strong as the weakest link" also comes to mind. You Can't just ignore the whole child and just isolate academics... We are Mind, Body, Soul and Spirit...

HISTORY OF THE GRIOT

A Griot (Gree-os) is an Afrikan Storyteller -Serer: kevel or kewel; Wolof: gewel) is an African historian, storyteller, praise singer, poet, Shaman, Vezir or musician. The Griot is a repository of oral tradition and is often seen as a leader due to their position as an advisor to royal personages.

In the modern world, storytelling techniques such as music, chant and audience participation make up the best presentations of African storytelling. Communication methods such as video and the Internet now allow anyone to experience the joy of an African story well told. African storytelling is a call and response interaction. There are distinctions of storytelling from Africans who still practice this art all over the world.

Empirical stimulation of the five senses helps to create a memory.
Use of color, sparkle, music, song, foods, chants, shaking hands and embrace and wonderful aromas aid in embracing the experience.

The storytellers or “Griots” know people will listen if the stories are fun and entertaining.

An audience that is laughing or otherwise experiencing deep emotions will be fully engaged in the story and therefore open to more learning.

Animals, Insects, plants and other forms of nature are part of the African storytelling process.

Familiar characters, such as Anansi the Spider, show up in many African stories. No matter how they are portrayed, such characters as the weaver-bird, the lion, mosquito and the hyena all become players in this special storytelling. Trees, lakes, rivers and other plants provide a geographical reference as well.

Morals and instructions in proper conduct can be found in African storytelling.
The first Griots not only entertained but they also served as vessels of moral guidance. It is rare to find an African story that does not convey deeper meanings. Each time a person hears a story, even when it is repeated, they may find a new perspective on the teaching. Master Griots were the Social Activist. They often played the fool to draw off the direct attention of a leader, yet they were able to touch the consciousness, heart and mind of a ruler, to help them see constructively, the error of their ways without confrontation and embarrassment.

African storytelling taught historical lessons.

Storytelling is a way for any culture to pass on its history. From stories from Africa, generic terms used now such as “Hero” “King & Queen” Nome, or “family” once had real names, meaning and a place in the geography of the Africa. These stories, still told with names in some parts of the world, help the audience to know where they fit into the world and history. By placing an unforgettable story in the hearts of children, left an indelible memory etched and unfolding in the minds of each child, for them to grow and pass from generation to generation, on vital moral and ethical principals, concepts and mores.

KWANZAA The Afrikan American Celebration to Practice Everyday

Kwanzaa: The Afrikan American Celebration to Practice Everyday

Kwanzaa (/ˈkwɑːn.zə/) is an African American Holiday!

This week-long celebration is held in the United States and in other nations of the African diaspora. It was created in 1965 by Maulana Karenga and was first celebrated in 1966. The celebration honors Afrikan heritage and culture and is observed from December 26 to January 1, culminating in a feast and gift-giving.

Kwanzaa is one of the 1st specifically African-American holidays. According to Karenga, the name Kwanzaa derives from the Swahili phrase "matunda ya kwanza", meaning "first fruits of the harvest." The choice of Swahili, an East African language, reflects its status as a symbol of Pan-Africanism, especially in the 1960s.

Another African American Celebration feast, that is held traditionally on the 4th Sunday of the month of November, is Umoja Karamu (Unity Feast); Created by Dr. Edward Sims in 1971. http://amen-parankh.blogspot.com/2015/11/2015-umoja-karamu-unity-feast.html - This feast recognizes 5 key periods of Black History in the Americas.

Kwanzaa is a celebration that has its roots in the Black Panther poor people's empowerment movement of the 1960s and was established as a means to help African Americans reconnect with their African cultural and historical heritage by uniting in meditation, the study of African traditions, and Nguzo Saba, the "seven principles of African Heritage" which Karenga said, "is a communitarian African philosophy". For Karenga, a leader in the Black Panther Power movement in California, of the 1960s and 1970s, the creation of such holidays also emphasized an essential premise that "you must have a cultural revolution before any other revolution. The cultural revolution gives identity, purpose, and direction."

Kwanzaa has 7 core principles called Nguzo Saba. (The Nguzo Saba means: Principles Seven-) to guide and direct the path of liberation:

Umoja means unity.
Kujichagulia means self-determination.
Ujima means collective working together.
Ujamaa means cooperative Economics
Nia means purpose.
Kuumba means a handmade basket to represent creativity.
Imani means faith, especially faith in ourselves.

Each day of the celebration is noted to celebrate a specific principle. The Swahili greeting of Habari Gani? is a question: What's the News? And the proper response is the principle of that day.

Day 1 Umoja (oo-MO-jah) Unity stresses the importance of togetherness for the family and the community, which is reflected in the African saying, "I am We," or "I am because We are."

Day 2 Kujichagulia (koo-gee-cha-goo-LEE-yah) Self-Determination requires that we define our common interests and make decisions that are in the best interest of our family and community.

Day 3 Ujima (oo-GEE-mah) Collective Work and Responsibility reminds us of our obligation to the past, present and future, and that we have a role to play in the community, society, and world.

Day 4 Ujamaa (oo-JAH-mah) Cooperative economics emphasizes our collective economic strength and encourages us to meet common needs through mutual support.

Day 5 Nia (NEE-yah) Purpose encourages us to look within ourselves and to set personal goals that are beneficial to the community.

Day 6 Kuumba (koo-OOM-bah) Creativity makes use of our creative energies to build and maintain a strong and vibrant community.

Day 7 Imani (ee-MAH-nee) Faith focuses on honoring the best of our traditions, draws upon the best in ourselves, and helps us strive for a higher level of life for humankind, by affirming our self-worth and confidence in our ability to succeed and triumph in righteous struggle.

There are 7 symbols that are represented for the harvest display:
Mkeka—woven mat: Symbolic of our tradition and history and therefore, the foundation on which we build
Kinara—candle holder: Symbolic of our roots, our parent people—continental Africans

KWANZAA is a Pan-Afrikan holiday based on the various “First Fruits Festivals” observed around the Afrikan diaspora, known by different names (ex. “Odwira” among the Ashanti, “Eje” among the Yoruba, “Umkhosi” among amaZulu etc).
Based on careful studies, a team of Afrikan researchers, led by Dr Maulana Karenga, introduced Kwanzaa in 1966 as a Pan-Afrikan celebration for the unification of all Afrikan/Black people – regardless of faith, nationality, ideology, language, and birthplace.
