ENVISIONING NEW LIFE Equinoxes and Solstices at Amen Par Ankh

We invite you to the Amen Par Ankh for our Visioning Days!

Recognizing the Solstices and Equinoxes of the Seasons defines Afrikan Culture Spirituality, and it's connections with the natural kingdom.

The Summer solstice is a time when the days are the longest until we reach the 25th of June when the days begin to shorten again to bring in the harvest and the Autumnal Equinox.

At Amen Par Ankh, We Celebrate the Vernal and Autumnal equinoxes, as well as the Summer and Winter Solstices, is as our Holy-Days of reflection, fasting and envisioning. We recommend that we are mindful of our bodies, minds, and Spirits.

Our Qi has been built up to it’s highest through Fasting, Consultation and Meditation, so now we can come together in the collective consciousness to vision for the future. Bring your Ankhs or any special symbol, Vision Charts or boards-

This is a time to create your Vision Board. A vision board is a tangible collection that creates your window into the future for manifestation.  As words have life, you can send out your sacred sounds into the universe that will not return void. So envision for your Mind Body and Spirit the Food Resources and comfort for your Senses as well as your Family, Friends and Loved ones around you.
We Fast 2-7 days before these Seasonal events.

You are invited to participate in our Seasonal Fasting!
In the Northern Hemisphere, Summer Solstice occurs between June 20th and 25th. Winter solstice occurs between December 20th and 25th. The sun appears at its most southerly position, directly overhead at the Tropic of Capricorn (23 degrees 27 minutes south latitude). The winter solstice is the shortest day of the year and marks the beginning of winter. It is the exact opposite in the Southern Hemisphere. Solstice loosely translated in Latin is "sun stands still". For several days before and after each solstice, the sun appears to stand still in the sky, i.e., its noontime elevation does not seem to change from day to day. Then it is Reborn again in the East position again and the days begin to lengthen.

Here is our Fasting regime. We first start by fasting off of meat, for the remaining days until the solstice. Only eating vegetables and fruits and a little brown rice for carbs and protein.
On the 19th – 23rd only consuming Water, Grapes, Oranges for enzymes, (with Rice to take care of your Carbs for those who have to work)
Adding more Vegetables on the 24th
Break the fast on the 25th with Apples and more vegetables, Carbs, and Fruits then build up to meat.

The Winter Solstice
is also a time for mindfulness; We must go within to engage our inner~net~work. This is a time to set goals and envision a fresh new path. We must throw out the "Stinkin Thinkin" of the past that is our own undoing.
Fast off of media energy too. All of the devices and appliances we have around us creates an energy wave that often times distracts us from our progress.
We must be mindful of our Family, Loved Ones, Friends, and Associates. Our melanin is depleted by the lack of Sun and can sometimes cause us to be depressed and lonely to the point of suicide. Oftentimes, many are stagnated and will release toxic energy. Remember, stress lowers our immunity, making us vulnerable to viruses and other diseases.

It is all right to work and exercise during your fast. This is a time to clean house and eliminate our external accumulation and congestions as well.
The Goddess Energy Surrounding this Winter Solstice Fast is: Auset Auset is the Wife of Ausar and the Mother Goddess, to Heru

The Energy Governing the Winter Solstice and Winter Season is Sebek, and Heru.
Winter is the season of Auset, Yemoja, Mother Mary, Lakshmi, Kwan Yin, and Gabri-El. In the Goddess tradition.

In Some Cultures, the Solstice also represents the Death of the Sun and It’s resurrection in 3 days.
In the Kemetic Societies, the Winter Solstice represents the birth of the quadruplet siblings, and deities: Ausar, Auset, Het-Heru, and Set,  then the birth of Heru to represent the 5 additional days in the year of 360.
As fall was the time to allow the winds to blow away the debris and clutter of our bodies, our minds, and spirits, now Winter is here.  The Solstice is the time to return to the quiet contemplation of the womb and to prepare for rebirth and renewal of ourselves into a deeper understanding of who we are. This is the time of going into the darkness of the womb in order to gestate our hearts' desires and to get more in alignment with our destiny.
Most people have no idea why we incarnate into our bodies. We are born and then begin to live lives, shaped by our society, culture, and conditioning. Many of us are living life in a certain way but we don't really know why we are doing so.

It is important to understand that there is so much more to who we are and the reason why we are here in this physical realm. It is said that “We are souls having a human experience, so we come to leaving the physical realm and getting to the deeper truth which is: that we are all ONE, We are all connected to the planet and the universe, and that we are all expressions of the One Divine Consciousness of the Creatress or Creator of the universe.
So when we climb into the Womb of Winter, we really want to be in a place where we are not bringing in a bunch of junk from the past with us. We need to spend the solstice cleansing and purifying with the intent to go into the womb with as little mental, emotional, spiritual and physical debris as possible.
To do so we have to look at our belief systems. Many of us are caught up in STINKIN' THINKIN'. There are some who think more of their own selves than they do anyone else. There are some who are quitters. Still others, whose ego feeds off stinking thinking, and do a great job of spreading negativity so that others then begin to think negatively too. Many of us are caught up in acting like we know a whole lot when really we know very little. “The More I know- The more I don’t Know”… Many of us are blind to the ceiling over ourselves and have yet to understand the fullness of our power.
Is your stinkin' thinkin' stopping you from gestating and birthing your dream? Have you stopped listening to your heart which will lead you to your destiny in order to play it safe?
Often times, because we are not getting a good balance of the sun, our hormones are off balance and our melanin is depleted. These changes may lead to frustration, depression, and sometimes suicide.
So, it is important to relate positively with our Loved Ones, Family and Friends during this season.
What is called for, is for us to get real with ourselves. The Indigo Native American animal totems for this fast and winter season are the HAWK and the COYOTE. What the Hawk is calling for you to do is to stand at the center of your life and to review your programming. What is your programming? What part is working for you and what part needs to be updated through aligning it with Universal Truth?

Here is a positive Affirmation:

I AM A LIMITLESS BEING WHO LIVES IN DIVINE CONSCIOUSNESS INCARNATE

Now is the time to work with our ROOT  and HEART CHAKRAS. This is the chakra that speaks to the foundation of survival and creation.
It is important to revisit family history that may still have a negative impact on you. What is needed is that we all look at what our family and culture have taught us about ourselves and the world and seek to transcend dogma, lack and limitation.
Heru governs the heart. Anyone in the Kemetic traditions will tell you that Auset is heart Centered Living. So be sure to determine if you are following your heart or following what the world and its material demands are telling you to follow.
NOW is the time to put away childish ways... in the sense that when you were a child you may have picked up incorrect beliefs that are causing you problems now. So do away with limiting beliefs and expand yourself to experience more of who you are.

This is the time to LEAD YOUR OWN SELF. BE THE SPIRITUAL LEADER OF YOUR PERSONAL MENTAL, EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL BODY TEMPLE.

Follow your inner guide, your higher self with respect to what is best for you. If you are not sure then consult an Elder or counselor, to verify what you think you are hearing from your inner guide. be the leader.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT NOT TO OPERATE FROM EMOTION. Stop letting your emotions rule you. Again, BE THE LEADER AND CHOOSE HOW YOU RESPOND. As a matter of fact when you realize that you always have a choice, then there is really no need for emotion.
And remember that what you think about you bring about. Will power has nothing to do with brute strength. Will Power has to do with life force energy. What you plant on your consciousness is what will manifest into physical form. The universe powers what you will, what you think about
So seek to spend the Winter Solstice and Season consciously planting what you will for your life in the garden of your mind. Just make sure that what you will is in alignment with the highest will for your life.
Take this time to slow down. SO many of us stay busy in general but the winter is a time where we need to give ourselves permission to take a breather. Spring will be here before we know it and we will really have to get busy then.
RELAX. Take it easy. Stop getting so upset about everything. RELAX. Be sure to pay attention to the moon phases so as to align yourself with the cycles of the moon.
What is needed to ensure that you maximize this season is that you do an overhaul of your belief system, be a good manager of yourself and live life by choice!
Part of the reason things don’t happen the way we want to. A disconnect between what we feel and how we act could be the reason. An imbalance in either direction can end up with you having to deal with an embarrassing situation that can timidly paralyze your expression.
A type of exercise that can help is known by many names including psychosomatic (mind-body) exercise or Yoga (union). However you choose to term it, there’s a reason why this type of exercise has been around for thousands of years and isn’t going away anytime soon, but your window of opportunity may…
ELEVATE –
If you do tend to get depressed around this time of year, you won’t be doing yourself any favors by trying to ignore the signs or by creating distractions using T.V., food, sex, social media, alcohol and other intoxicants, shopping or isolation. Overindulging in any of the above are likely to deepen your depressive state. Your symptoms may be relieved momentarily, but the burden of any excess or extremes in your life will take its own toll on your mind/emotions and body – leading to further depression.

It’s easy enough to say you want to rise above your demons, but without a proper exit strategy, you can remain locked in a depressed state for extended periods of time. Try focusing on the following:
What should I be motivated about (personal achievement-wise) for the next 365 days?
What can I prioritize in my life to ensure I fulfill my objectives?
How can I best prepare for the tasks in front of me?
In what way will the rewards of my actions benefit my life?
Be clear with yourself. Clear your path, clear your obstacles and clear the way to release yourself from any toxic friendships and relationships. Even clear yourself from getting in your own way. Many people have a fear of success on any level. It seems illogical, yet it does happen to the extent of individuals sabotaging their own efforts deliberately as they cannot handle the pressure of being responsible for their own selves. May the divine guide and assist you on your way.

For anyone who is interested in improving your health, detoxing from the pollutants, manifested in the Body Mind and Spirit, and gaining mastery over the processes of spiritual manifestation, fasting for Health and Life Strength and prosperity is the way to go.
If you are interested in receiving Life Coaching and Spiritual Cleansing for clear vision regarding the upcoming year or season, The Amen Par Ankh is at your service. We offer Your Personal health consultation, Detox and Spiritual Cleansing and home blessings for the Year

 A good way to begin fasts during  the seasonal changes;
 7-10 days of Winter (Winter Solstice / first day of the true calendar year because it is the death and resurrection of the Sun);
7-10 days of Spring (Vernal Equinox);
7-10 days of Summer (Summer Solstice); and
7-10 days of Autumn (Autumn Equinox)
fasts can go through different phases and generally last from 7 to 28 days, even though
a fast can go as long as 42 days. Fasting in cycles of 7 – is a sacred number in ancient cosmology.
The phases of fasts can proceed as follows:
1)     Introduction – Reducing and removing foods from your diet. It is good to first think of weaning off of Meat while eating Beans and Rice(brown) as your primary protein and Carbohydrate sources while eating plenty of Fruits and Vegetables. Next, move to raw foods-Salads and Smoothies are good for this phase. Next move to fruits; Grapes and Oranges. Alkaline water is excellent for maintaining electrolyte homeostasis.
2)     Water only for a period of from 1-2 to 7 days. This allows for quick conversion to the beneficial outcome of the fast and also reinforces discipline. You can add lemon or lime to your water to balance out your missing electrolytes, which is the source of the cramping. Water only is NOT recommended for those new to fasting as it can have some surprising negative consequences such as fainting and cramps. If you do feel faint it is most likely a consequence of a sugar crash; you can drink grape juice or orange juice for quick relief. Flaxseed oil can be used topically, in case your lips blister from the missing fats.
3)     Cellular Rebuilding -. Now begin cellular rebuilding with vegetable protein juicing with a lot of fruit along with almond or rice milk. Some choose soy-based protein powder. Make sure it is from organic soybeans. Fruits can include banana, mango, papaya, strawberries, grapes, blueberries, apples, oranges, kiwi and more. Additionally make vegetable juices with tomatoes, celery, and greens. Living Superfoods - the ideal way to return to eating solid foods is to go completely raw, organic with the incorporation of as many "super foods" and "super herbs" as possible. This way you will be able to maintain the new body at its highest energy vibration level as possible. Quite simply, after the detoxing cycle is complete, there is no rush to get back to the patterns of eating and living before the transformation.
4)     Colon Cleansing - After the water phase, an herbal laxative and unfiltered prune juice or plum juice provides a great elimination of masses which have accumulated in the colon and intestines, some of which has built up since between fast 90 days before. Once a year, at the Spring Equinox, after the water phase, the CKLS / olive oil cleanse REALLY gets the stuff that has attached itself rather permanently on the lining of the intestines and colon. You would be surprised at the stuff that comes out.
5)     Targeted System Cleansing - a series of organ cleaning, and blood cleaning juices; one per day. These proceed from or include: 100% cranberry; pomegranate; celery; carrot; apple, orange; cucumber and blueberry. Each of these has a specific purpose and are targeted at a specific body system: kidneys, blood vessels, blood, immune system and nervous system.
6)     Chelation Therapy - There are three phases to this part of the detox, each cycle lasts for approximately 8 hours and the cycle repeats for three days: First, take 1 tablespoon of Bentonite Clay along with one capsule of calcium disodium EDTA to remove heavy metals and toxins on the cellular fluid level (these can include arsenic, mercury, aluminum, lead, cadmium, nickel, and more). Then take three doses once every 2 hours and then break for two hours; Second, use about 2 oz. of Aloe Vera juice along with one capsule of a combination of Milk Thistle and dandelion root, as a liver rejuvenating tonic and blood cleanser; again three doses over 2 hours each, rest for 2 hours;
7)     Third, overnight use prune juice along with CKLS or Cascara Sagrada, both herbal laxatives, to remove the waste that has been pulled out from the body during the two previous sessions. This cycle goes on for three days.
After completing these phases on average about 1/6th of body weight, 20-26 lbs can be lost. This is a good loss, because this is also the waste that has accumulated in the intestinal and all other body systems.
We hope you find something helpful and inspiring in this information. It is recommended to seriously increase your exercise during the fast. A minimum of sit ups per day, along with vigorous walks, bike rides, hand weights and even strenuous outdoor work and house cleaning. DO NOT allow yourself to feel weak because of not eating, do not lie down and stagnate. The human body is an amazing machine!
Not only should we fast for our bodies, but we should also fast from our outer accumulation of material goods and media influences. The seasons are a good time to also clean our Mind and Spirit as well as our body.
We must all take control of our bodies and stop the habits that are contrary to our optimum health and vitality. The rewards are excellent, which include heightened intuition, increased clairvoyance, rapid detoxification, increased energy, heightened spiritual awareness and appreciation of the many blessings that are in our lives. Plus, you save $s each week from the money you saved on food.
As the optimal path toward sustaining this body purity, It is highly recommended to stay on a strictly vegan nutritional path immediately after the completion of the fast. The optimal is 99% raw, living food. The outcome will be miraculous.
Even further, the incorporation of "superfoods" into your regular food intake will access an even higher level of vital health and energy.

Winter Solstice, occurring on December 21, Is the birth of the new solar year. The beauty of stillness envelops you.
This is a time of quietness and inward reflections.
This time of rest, relaxation, and meditation is the key to regeneration and renewing your life and organs. The days are much shorter than autumn days. We become more sensitive to light and more prone to depressions. We become more inward, more isolated and lethargic, and more susceptible to illness. It is important to be out and about as much when the sun is visible the most. Because sunlight is a nutrient that has a catalytic effect on your body’s glands. Full Spectrum lights may provide some extra light to the body.
The sun would be moving into Capricorn) And the new moon would be on December 5th new moon in Scorpio, it is this time that cosmic energy would be released. And the main organ of focus would be the heart. Purification of the heart charka. So sing, share; use your hand to help others. So, this would be an excellent time to make some Kwanzaa gifts for family and friends and let everyone know how much you love and appreciate them. During this time the sun will be sitting still so this is an excellent time to align with your higher self. Below is just some basic information about this time… So, take only what you need because the information is given from a pure heart.
Doing this time you will prepare the root soup and eat on it for 1-2-3-days until December 21st then you will start your 3-5-7-9 or 21 day fast. Some people would have already started before now. Some people started on December 11, or before then. Just be mindful that any time you are allowed to fast be clearly a blessing no matter how long or short the time maybe. The body and spirit will appreciate. Make sure you have your unfinished business list to mark out what you have accomplished before the year ends. And have all your upcoming desires, goals for 2010. Try to end and cut off all unproductive cycles and challenges so you will not take the same energy and situation into the new cycle…
The purpose of the root soup is to ground you to the earth. So that you can lay the necessary foundations of change and transformation. So, if you were only able to eat the soup for one day or 1 minute or 1 hour it is more about your intentions at this time. Below is the recipe for the root soup and the foods to balance out the lunar and solar beings.
Root Soup veggies Taro (Yutia) Yam (Name) Jerusalem Artichoke, Celeriac (Parsley Root) Cassava (Yucca) Batata, Sweet Bicolor corn, Rice Dream Milk, Black Sesame Seeds, Veg-all seasoning ... or any seasoning that has a mixture of spices where all the elements are present (air, fire, water, earth, ether) This ground provisions earth root foods are neutral in their nurturing effect on the solar-lunar balance of the human body-brain- mind. Their Bi-Polar nature helps build strong human nerve forces to successfully cope with the unfamiliarity of Life's diverse crisis situations. These neutral virtues make them excellent transitional healing foods if auspiciously eaten at any of the four lunar quarter crossroads. (The fours seasons) Keep in mind you can eat whatever fruits and veggies you like doing this fasting time. However these particular veggies and fruits, spices are for the solar and lunar constitutions that go with the root soup…
If you are doing a juice fast or then you would make a juice, tea or tonic using the veggies, fruit, herbs and spices. You can also take the culinary spices as herbal teas.
Solar Constitution Born March 22- September 21st (Solar/Yang/Masculine Energy - Lunar cooling foods that will calm, sedate the stomach, spleen, lung, colon, heart Fruits: Apples, Blackberries, Blueberries, Mulberries, and Pears Vegetables: Brussels Sprouts Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, turnips, tomatoes, celery, Nuts: coconuts, sunflower, and pumpkinseed Supplement: Spiraling Spices: allspice, cardamom, coriander, kudzu, lavender, mace, saffron, vanilla, caraway, cayenne, dill, kelp, tarragon, mint, seaweed, thyme, white pepper
Lunar Constitution Born Sept 22- March 21st (Moon/Yin/Feminine Energy Solar heating foods that will stimulate, notify the stomach/spleen/lungs/heart, liver Fruits: Apricots, cherries, grapes, plums, and apple Vegetables: beets, carrot kale, chard, spinach, asparagus, leeks, and parsnips Seed liquids: walnuts, pistachio, and almonds Spices: anise, cadamon, cinnamon, clove, fennel, ginger, nutmeg, peppermint, basil, black pepper, cayenne, celery seed, garlic, fenugreek, marjoram, mustard, oregano, rosemary Fasting Protocol What do you plan to accomplish and cultivate spiritually before the year is up?
Spiritual Growth Steps- 1. Ask Permission from Creator, 2. Make Intentions, 3. Define true Purpose for Fast, 4. Do Forgiveness ritual, 5. Affirm your goals 6. Eat soup 7. Site Moon, 8. Start Fast. 9. Document your process (remember ego does not like documentation)
The first Principle of Healing Spiritually, Mentally, and emotionally is Fasting. Fasting gives your spirit an opportunity to evolve, cultivate, recognize and explore its Destiny.
You are training you body and life force. Seasonal fasting techniques are a medium for you to cultivate and transform and transport energy. The year is divided into 9 40 day cycles-Dec 25th, Feb 9th, March 21st, April 30th, June 9th, July 18th, August 27th, October 6th, November 15th,
These times are also set up by seasons. Autumn Equinox, Winter Solstice, Spring and Summer Solstice. You must fast at all 4 cycles to be in balance and in tune with The Creator, You’re Self, Nature, Earth, and the Universes. So based upon when you are born - You are either governed by the sun or moon- meaning its source and power was more dominated during your birth cycle. And certain minerals and vitamins and life force energy was present or missing doing this time. And you would need to take in those provisions to balance your self out...Keep in mind there are thousands of Fasting techniques out there and you must use whatever you feel comfortable with. This process deals more with tapping into the aspiciousness of the moment and time to bring balance than cultivation. Because our health and vibration must be stable, fluid, open, and receptive for transformation. However, when you do the same you get the same.... A good way to look at this is- we act and carry our self-a certain way because of families, jobs, mates, friends, society etc. But that is not our true self. That is our conditioned self. The mask that we wear to fit in gets along, keeps the peace, gets over, achieves our goals. Etc.
Organs to Focus On The heart- keep the heart light and loving during these dark times. Loving family and friends no matter what the interaction. Give freely and help others if you an able to without any financial stress or strain. Keep all interactions on a higher vibration. Do not create any new karma in dealing with family, friends, co-workers, or any business dealings, etc. Kidneys- Protecting and strengthening the kidneys and adrenals glands, bladder skin, lungs, and liver. These organs are important because they work harmoniously in the detection process t eliminate waste from your system. The kidneys filter blood to a balance between water and the body’s acidity level. They help your system keep the right amount of vitamins and minerals while helping to pull out elements like nitrogen, minerals, salts, and unwanted chemicals. Did you know that in one day the kidney filters thousands quarts of blood, of which approximately 160 quarts of fluid are extracted for one another filtering, process? When your kidney is not is stressed or weakened, their lack of energy ripples throughout your body. Your skin is forced to do double work to help with the elimination process, which causes rashes and other skin conditions to appear. One of the biggest challenges you will face during this time is stress. Stress whether its environmental, emotional, physical or spiritual. It places a great hardship on the adrenal glands (stress glands) and heart. The adrenal manufacture hormones such as adrenaline and cortical, a steroid is known as the stress hormone.
Mineral deficiency - Doing this time you are more prone to zinc deficiencies and copper overload. When this organ is too stressed it can no longer signal the liver to detoxify and excrete excess copper through their protein escort known as ceruloplasmin.  Depressed adrenal functions can create various secondary symptoms such as chronic fatigue or exhaustion, low blood pressure, food or environmental allergies, low immune functions; hypoglycemia or diabetes; PMS, or menopause difficulties, hot flash, irritability, weight gain, salt or sugar cravings and difficulties with sight. Clothing such be lose and layered natured materials. Avoid other blends because they do not allow the skin to breathe. Do keep your head and neck covered to protect body heat from escaping. Water removes body heat at least twenty times faster than air. Exercise- select sports that are good for cardiovascular health. 3 days a week for 30 minutes. Indoor sports like yoga, tai chi stretching and toning. You must develop good sleep habits in bed by 10:00pm. Take more breaks from work and do more reading, listening to music, stretching, doing deep breathing, meditating and affirmations. Food- since we are going into a time of stillness and rest. Your food and diet should provide warmth so that your body’s energy is free to sustain body heat and immunity. It is important to consume warm teas and tonics, soups and lentils and beans, miso soup. And if you normally eat a raw diet make sure you allow some warmth in the body to be in balance. The food protocol listed below is just fruit and vegetables recommended during the winter months. They are to be eaten after the fasting time. Herbal support - Hawthorne- Berries - strengthen and protect the heart. Teas- Nettles- because it is rich in source of alkalizing minerals helpful in cleansing and adrenal support. Juniper berries- acts a diuretic and excellent for the bladder Marshmallow root - it is good for soothing mucous membrane irritation in the urinary tract. Ginger- stimulates glands to purify. Oils- Olive, flaxseed, sesame oil because they are high in a natural antioxidant known as sesame, resistant to oxidation. Horsetail- Beans- adzuki, pinto beans, lentils, black beans. Eat more starchy veggies- burdock, acorn squash, parsnips, turnips, Jerusalem artichoke, yams, sweet potatoes, taro, yucca, Jamaica, and other African and Caribbean root vegetables. Unlimited veggies raw or steamed low glycemic. Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, celery, celeriac, eggplant, green beans, green leafy salad, mushrooms( boletus, chanterelle, morel, and shitake, greens (kale, collards, mustard, onions, chives, green, leeks, scallions, and parsley radish Fruits- pears, apples, cranberry, tangerines, Nuts- almond, cashews, coconut milk, hazelnuts, pecans, pine nuts, pistachio, pumpkin seeds, sesame seed, and sunflower seeds. Grains- Kasha, whole grains, and sprouted pieces of bread, fiber-rich foods are good for circulation.

KWANZAA The Afrikan American Celebration to Practice Everyday

Kwanzaa: The Afrikan American Celebration to Practice Everyday

Kwanzaa (/ˈkwɑːn.zə/) is an African American Holiday!

This week-long celebration is held in the United States and in other nations of the African diaspora. It was created in 1965 by Maulana Karenga and was first celebrated in 1966. The celebration honors Afrikan heritage and culture and is observed from December 26 to January 1, culminating in a feast and gift-giving.

Kwanzaa is one of the 1st specifically African-American holidays. According to Karenga, the name Kwanzaa derives from the Swahili phrase "matunda ya kwanza", meaning "first fruits of the harvest." The choice of Swahili, an East African language, reflects its status as a symbol of Pan-Africanism, especially in the 1960s.

Another African American Celebration feast, that is held traditionally on the 4th Sunday of the month of November, is Umoja Karamu (Unity Feast); Created by Dr. Edward Sims in 1971. http://amen-parankh.blogspot.com/2015/11/2015-umoja-karamu-unity-feast.html - This feast recognizes 5 key periods of Black History in the Americas.

Kwanzaa is a celebration that has its roots in the Black Panther poor people's empowerment movement of the 1960s and was established as a means to help African Americans reconnect with their African cultural and historical heritage by uniting in meditation, the study of African traditions, and Nguzo Saba, the "seven principles of African Heritage" which Karenga said, "is a communitarian African philosophy". For Karenga, a leader in the Black Panther Power movement in California, of the 1960s and 1970s, the creation of such holidays also emphasized an essential premise that "you must have a cultural revolution before any other revolution. The cultural revolution gives identity, purpose, and direction."

Kwanzaa has 7 core principles called Nguzo Saba. (The Nguzo Saba means: Principles Seven-) to guide and direct the path of liberation:

Umoja means unity.
Kujichagulia means self-determination.
Ujima means collective working together.
Ujamaa means cooperative Economics
Nia means purpose.
Kuumba means a handmade basket to represent creativity.
Imani means faith, especially faith in ourselves.

Each day of the celebration is noted to celebrate a specific principle. The Swahili greeting of Habari Gani? is a question: What's the News? And the proper response is the principle of that day.

Day 1 Umoja (oo-MO-jah) Unity stresses the importance of togetherness for the family and the community, which is reflected in the African saying, "I am We," or "I am because We are."

Day 2 Kujichagulia (koo-gee-cha-goo-LEE-yah) Self-Determination requires that we define our common interests and make decisions that are in the best interest of our family and community.

Day 3 Ujima (oo-GEE-mah) Collective Work and Responsibility reminds us of our obligation to the past, present and future, and that we have a role to play in the community, society, and world.

Day 4 Ujamaa (oo-JAH-mah) Cooperative economics emphasizes our collective economic strength and encourages us to meet common needs through mutual support.

Day 5 Nia (NEE-yah) Purpose encourages us to look within ourselves and to set personal goals that are beneficial to the community.

Day 6 Kuumba (koo-OOM-bah) Creativity makes use of our creative energies to build and maintain a strong and vibrant community.

Day 7 Imani (ee-MAH-nee) Faith focuses on honoring the best of our traditions, draws upon the best in ourselves, and helps us strive for a higher level of life for humankind, by affirming our self-worth and confidence in our ability to succeed and triumph in righteous struggle.

There are 7 symbols that are represented for the harvest display:
Mkeka—woven mat: Symbolic of our tradition and history and therefore, the foundation on which we build
Kinara—candle holder: Symbolic of our roots, our parent people—continental Africans
Mishumaa Saba—the seven candles: Symbolic of the Nguzo Saba (7 principles), the matrix and minimum set of values which African people are urged to live by in order to rescue and reconstruct their lives in their own image and according to their own needs
Mazao—crops: Symbolic of African harvest celebrations and of the rewards of productive and collective labor
Muhindi—corn: Symbolic of our children and our future which they embody
Kikombe cha Umoja—unity cup: Symbolic of the foundational principle and practice of unity which makes all else possible
Zawadi—gifts: Symbolic of the labor and love of parents and the commitments made and kept by the children.

KWANZAA is a Pan-Afrikan holiday based on the various “First Fruits Festivals” observed around the Afrikan diaspora, known by different names (ex. “Odwira” among the Ashanti, “Eje” among the Yoruba, “Umkhosi” among amaZulu etc).
Based on careful studies, a team of Afrikan researchers, led by Dr Maulana Karenga, introduced Kwanzaa in 1966 as a Pan-Afrikan celebration for the unification of all Afrikan/Black people – regardless of faith, nationality, ideology, language, and birthplace.

Kansas City EMWOT Sponsors Will Allen

Kansas City Hosts Urban Agriculture Pioneer Will Allen

Founder of Growing Power, Inc., teaches aquaponics workshop, gives keynote address.
By Adenike AmenRa
On August 27, Kansas Citians had the opportunity to meet and learn from one of Urban Agriculture’s most prominent innovators and advocates: Will Allen. As Founder and CEO of Growing Power, Allen and a crew of builders, accepted an invitation by Kansas City’s Green Acres Urban Farm and Research Project to spend a day here in town, sharing insights and technologies on the topic of “Abolish Food Deserts.” The day started with a keynote lecture at the Discovery Center in Kansas City, MO, in which Allen discussed some of the production technologies he developed at Growing Power, including aquaponics, composting and year-round production.

Allen also discussed urban agriculture in the broader context of food sovereignty and food deserts.

After attending a reception with youth at the KCMO Bluford Library, Allen spent the afternoon conducting a Master Building Workshop at East High School on Van Brunt Bl. At this event, folks learned to build aquaponics bunk bed systems designed to raise fish and vegetables in a nutrient-cycling unit. More than 30 participants acquired important food production and farming skills which they are able to take back into their communities and pass on to others.

Altogether some 150 people came out throughout the day to listen to, learn from and be inspired by

Allen. Kansas City Mayor Sly James authorized the presentation of the Key to the City to Will Allen,

which was presented by Assistant to the City Manager, Kimiko Black Gilmore. Brook Hollingsworth,

Lincoln University’s first aquaponics graduate, and KCMO councilwoman Sharon Sanders Brooks were

also in attendance.

Will Allen is founder and CEO of Growing Power, Inc., headquartered in Milwaukee, WI, with project

offices in Chicago and Madison. He received a MacArthur Foundation “Genius" Award in 2008, appeared

in Bon Appétit and Oprah Magazines, was named as one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People

in 2010, and appeared in the award-winning documentary FRESH. Among the many urban farmers and

activists inspired by Allen is Kansas City resident Sasteh Mosley, co-founder of the Green Acres Urban Farm and Research Project and CEO of the non-profit organization East Meets West of Troost (EMWOT). Mosley's farming career began in Milwaukee with Will Allen at Growing Power in 1993. Back then he wore many hats including marketing, wholesale purchasing, CSA organizing and Alabama farm research. His Growing Power experience laid solid groundwork for his life work of making the

connections between growing food, community development, and neighborhood empowerment.

The Green Acres' aquaponics project is a partnership between the City of Kansas City, MO, the KCMO

School District and other organizations. This project utilizes campus greenhouses at East High School to

launch an aquaponics program and initiative that will provide fresh food to the community, education, and hands-on learning for students. Through common goals, partnerships and innovative thinking, all

involved in this effort are chipping away at the problems of urban food deserts, compromised educational systems, crime and a lack of jobs. This project will feed people while nurturing their souls through a new connection to food, agriculture and aquaponics.
