Amen Ankh Urban Farm- Wild Edible Plant Foods: Identifying Purslane

Foraging: Identifying and Eating Purslane (avoid poisonous spurge!)

Purslane: abundant, tasty, very nutritious, and pretty easy to identify--with just a couple pointers!

Identification difficulty for the Novice

Purslane, (latin name: Portulaca oleracea), is a wonderful, edible "weed". It's tasty, versatile, highly nutritious, easy to find, grows everywhere and is relatively easy to identify. It's not native to North America, so it is generally considered to be an invasive weed. For those of you with an interest in Foraging, homesteading, and/or sustainable eating, choosing invasive species for your meals is one of the most sustainable, locavore options. There's even a word for it: invasivore

Purslane does have one dangerous look-a-like: the potentially deadly spurges. (Euphorbia varieties). I find that they really don't look that much alike, and there is one tried and true way to tell them apart--making purslane a good plant for even a novice forager.

With that in mind, I'd like to tell you everything I have learned about purslane, including how to identify it, and how not to confuse it with spurge, and some basic cooking tips.

Purslane history

Purslane has spread throughout all of the Old World, (Europe, North Africa, and Asia). It is eaten fairly frequently through out it's range, especially in the Indian subcontinent. With European imperialism, purslane spread to Australia and North and South America, where is is commonly eaten,(especially Mexico)-- Strangely, it is often considered a weed and not eaten in U.S. or Canada in the modern day. (It used to be eaten in parts of the US as recently as WWII.)

Purslane can be found almost anywhere, and can adapt itself to a variety of climates, from arid to damp, hot to cold, and sun to shade. It's considered a succulent, and can adapt itself to environments that experience the extremes of  rainy seasonal monsoons and months-long droughts.

Identifying Purslane: Portulaca oleracea*

  1. Purslane grows low along the ground, generally under 3". Occasionally it will create a bunch or cluster, which can grow about 6" high. It grows from a central taproot, so all the branches of an individual plant will come together at the same place.
  2. Purslane is a succulent. Both stalk and leaves have a thick, fleshy feeling to them. The leaves are not as thick as in most decorative succulents, but their leaves and stems are thicker than spurge. Think of the thickness of kid leather. (See close-up pic).
  3. Stems can be red or green with a reddish tinge. Small bright yellow flowers can grow from the cluster of leaves. Leaves are a bright green.
  4. Leaves grow out from the stalk in a "star", of four leaves. Sometimes 2 of these leaves will form before the others, but most times you see the leaves on a plant they will be in groups of 4--often 2 large and 2 small. This looks very similar to a whorled leaf configuration.
    See pic.
The four-leaf "star" like growth of purslane
  5. Purslane leaf edges are smooth, not serrated. (They don't have jagged or toothy edges)
  6. Purslane stems are smooth and hairless.
  7. Most importantly: if you break the stem of purslane, there is NO sticky white liquid (called latex), Purslane may be a little sticky, but it will be clear, not white. However, small the latex on small spurge plants can be very hard to notice and/or dry up quickly, so make sure to use ALL identification points.

Disclaimer

Important!

Never eat any wild plant unless you are 100% sure that you have identified an edible species.
Always cross-reference the information you find on the internet with an expert, a foraging group, or several reference books. Have fun, but be responsible. Identification is entirely your responsibility. . . and it can also mean your life!

*As always you should never accept anything you read on the internet without verifying it for yourself with either a local expert or several publications. Colors can vary from monitor to monitor, and images are not as clear as in printed materials. Personally, before I eat anything I verify it with at least 3 reliable sources. I have found this to be a remarkably good way of ensuring my safety when foraging.

Poisonous Spurges: Euphorbia varieties
  1. Euphobia is a pretty big genus, including poinsettias, which are also poisonous. Spurges also grow low along the ground, generally under 3", and they too can grow higher. They also grow in a creeping fashion, out of a central point.
  2. Spurges are not succulents, so the leaves are thinner, like typical plants. If you look at this spurge image, the leaves are almost paper-thin. Not all varieties are this delicate, but none are as thick as those of purslane.
  3. Stems can be red or green with a reddish tinge. Leaves are a darker green, compared to purslane, in most varieties.
  4. Leaves grow parallel to each other on the stem in pairs. These leaves will always be opposite each other on the stem, unless they are growing at the junction of a branch. (Then the 2 leaves and the branch will come off the stem evenly spaced--like the spokes in a wheel). But there will never be more than 2 leaves at the same point on the stem.
  5. Every spurge I know of has serrated, indented or toothed leaves. However, sometimes these serrations are very small, and the teeth can also be small and widely spaced--appearing smoother.
  6. Most (but not all) spurges have hairy stems. Some also have hairy leaves.
  7. Most importantly: if you break the stem of a spurge, it will ooze a sticky white liquid, called latex.
Because of leaf pairings, spurge tends to grow more horizontal than purslane. A flatter flat, if you will.
Just as poinsettia can become a problem for house pets, spurges have caused deaths among sheep or other small domestic foraging animals. If you have spurge in your yard, I would use gloves, and try pulling it out if you have young children or pets who go out un-escorted.

Sustainability

Purslane is a non-native species in the Americas. (To be completely fair, there may be native varieties, but they have interbred and/or died out from competition with the ones brought over from the new world). Purslane is commonly considered to be an invasive species. Invasive generally implies that the plant is doing active harm to the native environment/species, like edible Kudzu. Invasive species are generally considered to be beneficial. in their introduction,

However purslane has been here so long that it's pretty much done whatever damage it's going to do. Like dandelion, it's very possible that purslane wiped out native species when it arrived, but the invading colonizers weren't keeping track, so we really have no idea.

Eating a bunch of purslane, even wiping out a local patch or two isn't going to do any damage to your environment. (Provided you don't use chemicals, of course). Of course, In my opinion, purslane is a very pretty plant, as well as a tasty one. And, given that it can and will grow everywhere, and spreads quickly, you can use it for a nice ground cover in areas you are having difficulty getting anything to grow. Purslane will grow from cuttings, so if you want to get rid of it, don't compost, or let it go to seed. Kept in check, however purslane is a good companion plant for gardens, and helps retain soil moisture.

Eating Purslane

Purslane is a great vegetable for anyone: forager, or gardener. Unlike some wild plants which are bitter (and need to be boiled) or tough and stringy (and do best in a food processor), purslane has excellent flavor and texture, and can be prepared raw or cooked. The leaves, flowers and stems are all edible, (I have never heard of anyone eating the roots--so I would avoid them).

Eaten raw, they have a juicy, crunchy texture. I would call it closest to celery, with an okra like liquid. without the stringiness of celery. The flavor is somewhat tart with a mellow grassy note, or like a mild seaweed.  Where I used to live, it grew prolifically, by roadsides and parking lots--(areas where you would risk ingesting dangerous chemicals.)

Use purslane raw in salads, and sandwiches. When cooked, purslane looses much of it's unique texture, becoming soft like cooked spinach. If you cook it lightly, however, it makes an excellent substitute for pasta--like a thick spaghetti or an udon noodle. Purslane is naturally vegan and gluten free, but has mucilaginous aspect: like okra, purslane will release a sticky liquid when cooked. This "mucilage" can be used to thicken soups and stews, or even an egg white substitute, but if using purslane as a pasta substitute, you will need to rinse the veggie thoroughly and may need multiple changes of boiling water. Cooking purslane also removes much of the sour apple flavor, making it taste more like a spinach or other cooked pot-herb. Other cultures around the world use purslane in baked goods, including semi-sweet applications.

Nutrition

I rarely get to talk about nutrition in wild plants, because the studies just haven't been done. But purslane has a long history of consumption, throughout the world, and we know a lot about what it has to offer.

Purslane is a nutritional powerhouse. Vegetarians and vegans especially will be excited to know that purslane has more heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids than any other leafy vegetable plant. It's protein and iron concentrations are higher than in any cultivated vegetable--including kale. Purslane has more magnesium, vitamin A and vitamin E than kale as well. In a calorie to calorie comparison, it has more potassium than a banana. In addition there are some B vitamins, a good amount of vitamin C, a fair amount of calcium, and a smattering of those micronutrients people say we should get more of. . . All nutritional data has been gathered from the Wikipedia page.

Note of caution

Purslane has oxalates in it, similar to Japanese knotweed and wood sorrel. As we've mentioned before, many veggies you can buy in the store have oxalic acid, including spinach and rhubarb. People with kidney problems and/or rheumatoid arthritis should avoid these foods. The sick, the elderly, the very young and women who are pregnant or nursing should also avoid wild plants on general principle.

HISTORY OF THE GRIOT

A Griot (Gree-os) is an Afrikan Storyteller -Serer: kevel or kewel; Wolof: gewel) is an African historian, storyteller, praise singer, poet, Shaman, Vezir or musician. The Griot is a repository of oral tradition and is often seen as a leader due to their position as an advisor to royal personages.

In the modern world, storytelling techniques such as music, chant and audience participation make up the best presentations of African storytelling. Communication methods such as video and the Internet now allow anyone to experience the joy of an African story well told. African storytelling is a call and response interaction. There are distinctions of storytelling from Africans who still practice this art all over the world.

Empirical stimulation of the five senses helps to create a memory.
Use of color, sparkle, music, song, foods, chants, shaking hands and embrace and wonderful aromas aid in embracing the experience.

The storytellers or “Griots” know people will listen if the stories are fun and entertaining.

An audience that is laughing or otherwise experiencing deep emotions will be fully engaged in the story and therefore open to more learning.

Animals, Insects, plants and other forms of nature are part of the African storytelling process.

Familiar characters, such as Anansi the Spider, show up in many African stories. No matter how they are portrayed, such characters as the weaver-bird, the lion, mosquito and the hyena all become players in this special storytelling. Trees, lakes, rivers and other plants provide a geographical reference as well.

Morals and instructions in proper conduct can be found in African storytelling.
The first Griots not only entertained but they also served as vessels of moral guidance. It is rare to find an African story that does not convey deeper meanings. Each time a person hears a story, even when it is repeated, they may find a new perspective on the teaching. Master Griots were the Social Activist. They often played the fool to draw off the direct attention of a leader, yet they were able to touch the consciousness, heart and mind of a ruler, to help them see constructively, the error of their ways without confrontation and embarrassment.

African storytelling taught historical lessons.

Storytelling is a way for any culture to pass on its history. From stories from Africa, generic terms used now such as “Hero” “King & Queen” Nome, or “family” once had real names, meaning and a place in the geography of the Africa. These stories, still told with names in some parts of the world, help the audience to know where they fit into the world and history. By placing an unforgettable story in the hearts of children, left an indelible memory etched and unfolding in the minds of each child, for them to grow and pass from generation to generation, on vital moral and ethical principals, concepts and mores.

ELECTRIC FOODS- How Can Eating Electric Foods Benefit the Body

What are Electric Foods?

Electric foods are completely natural, completely indigenous to the Earth, saturated with Sun rays and 100% alive!
Electric foods help to increase the copper within the nervous system promoting a greater activation and use of your brain and senses.
Electric foods are alkaline. Our bodies are alive. We are a living life force. Energy makes us move. Alkaline foods supplies energy, helps the body to heal and nourish itself.
Electric foods are non-hybrid, not genetically modified, non-irradiated. Just eating Fresh Raw Foods can change and heal your body...

"Dr. Sebi centers his medicinal approach on herbology. His beliefs are grounded in that all beings were created by God as electrical entities. From birth, we feed our bodies "dead" foods found in traditional stores and grocery shops. Electric foods can only be found in nature. The theory is essence centers on the natural circle of life. By giving one's body back to nature you will return to your natural healthy state. The herbs and foods that cure are ones grown without the interference of the hand of man. That is to say, if an herb grows naturally in a forest, it retains its electric curing ability, but the same herb grown in a hot house will not hold healing qualities." www.Drsebiproducts.com

The first time that I discovered “Electric Food” was from a man affectionately named Dr. Sebi. Although he was not a conventional doctor, he listened to his mother and other indigenous people around him, who studied nature, life and positive changes to make for a healthier lifestyle. One thing he discovered was that foods traditionally served in homes were tainted and changed. Foods have been changed, most times on the DNA- molecular-cellular level, in order to control the seeds, control and accelerate mass production of the foods and/or add insecticides.

Chickens, Cows, Fish and many other living animals raised for food are fed antibiotics, artificial vitamin supplements, and growth hormones, using injections and genetically engineered feed, to assure the largest possible animal, grown as quickly as possible; therefore ensuring the most money made from the animal. The same system of artificial chemicals would go for growing fruit and vegetable produce as well. Many farmers use toxic insecticides and artificial commercial fertilizers in order to supplement the size and yield of their crops. All of these actions changes food from being "Electrically" balanced with our bodies to being off-balance. In order to change your eating practices from mundane to "Electric" all you have to do is go back to nature.

GROW YOUR OWN FOODS!

The best foods are those that have been picked fresh from your own cultivated garden, then put into your mouth. These foods have been nurtured with your own hands, so you receive the direct energy from the Seedlings, Water, Soil and Sun as well as the fact that you have established a relationship with your foods.

We are Eternal Beings. Energy cannot be created or destroyed. Our bodies come from ancient stardust. Many families are returning to the higher consciousness of our Ancient Ancestors, in Earth Grounding and Sun, Moon and Stargazing. Raw is best. Electric foods are alive with enzymes and nutrients. the fresher and you eat these nutrients, the more successful you will get these life-giving nutrients into your body.

Our bodies are like batteries. In order to maintain a full charge, our bodies must maintain the right Electrolyte balance of acid and alkaline state. Thick Slimy mucus and phlegm secretions from the body are a sign of a high acidic state. This promotes water retention inflammation in joints and vital organs, and toxicity and dehydration in the liver and kidneys.
Remember, Cancers, bad bacteria, flukes and viruses thrive in an acidic starchy environment. Your body responds and suffers poorly to the consumption of devitalized Sugars, Salts, and Starches (processed corn, and wheat produced foods)- like you're eating rocks!
Our bodies are our space suits- the only one we have! We've got to take care of our bodies and be a good model to teach our children good habits.

At Amen Par Ankh, Amen Ankh Urban Farms and Amen Ankh Akademy, we are KRST Conscious. We seek to be stewards of the earth, to live ecologically friendly and in harmony with the creation. We follow Ausar's mandate: to grow and produce foods, resources, and comfort, living in harmony with creation. We honor the lessons of our ancient Ancestars! All life is sacred!  Our Aku (Ancient Ancestors,) paid propitiation before we took anything from nature. In our world view, no one could own what belonged to nature and the universe. So the division, De-forestation, destruction of ecosystems, mono-cropping, and the buying and selling of land into plots and parcels, also the itemization of our workforce of laborers, as expendable assets, was unheard of! Our Ancestars were Matriarchal Gatherer/Hunters, This means that Earliest Ancient Ancestors followed the herds of grazing, animals and learned to eat what the animals ate- mostly vegetation, fruits and some insects. So, our animals became our teachers. They taught us about the terrains, the waterways, the seasons, and best locations to harvest and glean the foods at their peak ripeness. These foods would provide the vital nutrients and energy that we needed to perform and survive the climates and diverse environments. We learned to defend ourselves and controlled our predators for security. As we learned to hunt down animals, we also began to eat our teachers – and started corralling, herding, and cooking the animals. We finally began planting and growing our foods in selected locations, instead of foraging, which lead us to a more sedentary lifestyle. So, the Pastoral Herders/Shepherd Kings, and then the Agricultural farmers/ Mound builders, established empires that lasted thousands of years!

At Amen Par Ankh, we seek to live in earth-friendly ways as our Aboriginal Ancestors. At Amen Ankh Urban Farm, we grow and produce foods, fresh from our local farm, and growers.

Most of us are overweight, have poor complexions and inflammation because we are holding toxic chemicals, gases and heavy metals in our bodies and we are starving on the cellular level. We are not receiving the proper vitamins and nutrients, and whole grain energy that we need from our foods. So we continue to be hungry, unsatisfied, and overeating because our biological system is still in need. The nutrients we need are not found in their proper form from most "junk" and "fast" foods that we eat daily. We are killing ourselves by what we put into our own mouths and feed to our families- According to the CDC we are dying MORE OFTEN from Heart attack, High Blood Pressure, Stroke, Diabetes, and Cancers- than HOMICIDE!

Organic foods are the #1 choice available in supermarkets today. Even though these foods are not totally in sync with our body's electric nature, one might think that these foods are the closest one may get in a mass-produced setting. All certified organic foods are produced - artificial fertilizer free and insecticide free, bringing the electric levels higher than GMO foods that have been tampered with, from the DNA level of seedings and their growing process. Yet, you are paying a higher retail markup, and these foods are still packaged and stored over time in such a way to diminish the nutrient content.

This is a vital difference in our org-Ankh food boxes from Amen Ankh Urban Farms.

93% of the vegetables and fruits in a typical American diet are hybrids and genetically modified objects (GMOs). This means that the seeds and plants were modified and created or engineered in a science laboratory- not nature. These Frankenstein foods are not indigenous to the Earth. Typically, they are also highly acidic. High acidic foods are the opposite of alkalinity, which causes a block in the absorption of nutrients on a cellular level. The food that makes up the normal US diet is not even real! GMO’s are associated with the causes of cancers, deformities in babies because they are invasive on the genetic level. When nutrients are listed on the nutritional labels, typically on labeled foods – these vitamins & minerals most likely are not in the proper state that our bodies can assimilate (actually absorb into the blood cells and vital organs)!
Here is a video on Codex Alimentarius:

In essence, the United States food system, and many other countries have created a whole system that sets up people for dis-ease, stress and bad health. As we Free our minds- the rest will follow…

With the commercialism of consumerism and the Kkorporatakrazy, serving their greed and profit interests, even beyond every pure effort and honest discipline, your family may still consume things that are not good for them. More than likely, we may even consume more hybrid and pseudo-foods. Our Air and Water and Soil has also been compromised, with our efforts to grow our own foods in an urban and suburban environment. We may be exposed to lead, aluminum, mercury, fluoride, chlorine, nicotine, etc.

One simple thing we can do to change this is: DON`T EAT ANY FRUITS WITHOUT SEEDS (How could they be natural?) Remember that the vibration rate of "electric" foods are highest when you put your own hands on them, from the earth. So, growing your own foods, detoxing, exercise, breastfeeding as long as you possibly can, not eating out of Fast food and convenience stores are a vital necessity! If you just can’t grow your own foods, get to know your local grower. That is where local Urban Agriculture plays a key role. It is important to eat the foods that are locally grown where you live, to introduce the local pollens, microorganisms, and energy into your body system. This increases your immunity and lowers allergy symptoms. Detoxing with electric foods and herbs are vital to our health to remove the free radicals from our brains and other vital organs that take their toll on our health, performance, wellness and overcome the aging process.

Organic meats are also available in stores, but one cannot ensure the lineage of the animal. Once changes are made to an animal for generations, those changes taint the genetic cellular structure of the animal. Thus, even organic meats can be produced from animals with no "Electric" or natural lineage.

Aside from organic store-bought foods, the best place to find "Electric" foods is in your own backyard. Growing your own vegetables and herbs is a perfect way to re-sync your body with Mother Earth. "Electric" foods are ones that have a high vibration rate; this alludes to the foods closeness to the natural Earth. If you grow your own tomatoes from Heirloom seeds, you will be growing and consuming an "Electric" tomato, whereas if you purchase the tomato from a grocery store the vibration or "Electric" rate will be nearly non-existent. So, "Electric" foods are not that far from your front door. By growing your own produce, you will be one step closer to becoming "electric.

At Amen Ankh Urban Farm, We Grow Food Not Lawns!

We know that in the hustle and bustle, hassles of life, many may not have the time- or the capacity to grow all of the favorite foods that are vital. The Amen Ankh Farm has networked with other Urban Farmers to compile a variety of locally grown foods. Get to know your grower. The best foods are picked directly from the ground. If you had an Organic fruit, you could save the seeds and bring them to your grower to plant again. Also, save all of your organic produce food scraps to compost and take them to your local organic farmer to add back to the soil.

When consuming beverages, alkaline water is best. By placing your hands on or near water with the intention of raising the water vibration rate, you will turn the water "electric"; thus fitting the water into your "electric" lifestyle. The Amen Ankh Urban Farm offers a proprietary Moringa tea, that when mixed with water, will electrify- and alkalize your body, when you consume it. We also provide a Juice lover’s box filled with sprouted herbs, seeds, and Dandelion Detox!

The theory of consuming "electric" foods is quite simple, get back to nature, Grow your own and eat alkaline foods, grow what you eat or connect with and support a grower, conserve your seeds.
